Very Large Antique Staffordshire Dogs - 19th Century
Large pair of antique Staffordshire dogs with glass eyes and large curly tails. White colour with gilding to the bodies. Hand-painted and all original, circa 1870. A rare and very attractive example.
Originally produced in the 1750s, Staffordshire figures became hugely popular in the Victorian era, particularly among the upper classes, and were traditionally sold and displayed in pairs on mantelpieces. There are slight variations between the two figures, including the eyebrows and mouths.
Condition: Good antique condition - one figure (the smaller) has a repaired chip to the front foot; expected age-related wear to the hand-painted decoration and surface crazing, consistent with age.
Dimensions: One 33cm high, the other 32cm high; both approx. 27cm wide x 10cm deep.
