Dutch Hindeloopen Folk Art Painted Wooden Bowl
A Dutch Hindeloopen folk art bowl in turned wood, painted on a deep crimson red ground with a continuous band of folk decoration around the exterior: a long-tailed bird in flight among open flowers, buds, and scrolling foliage, all rendered in cream, gold, and dark brown.
The Hindeloopen tradition is one of the most distinctive in Dutch folk art, rooted in the small Frisian town of the same name and shaped by centuries of trade with Scandinavia and the East.
Condition: Good vintage condition. Some cracking to the wood is visible on the exterior, consistent with the age of the piece and the natural movement of the timber. Paint surface intact overall with some minor wear to raised edges, and the interior has some areas where the paint has come away (see photo).
