Italian Marquetry Hexagonal Jewellery Box
A beautiful hexagonal jewellery box from Italy, made in the distinctive Sorrento tradition of fine wood marquetry. The lid is inlaid with a softly detailed floral spray worked in contrasting veneers, roses, leaves, and stems rendered with real delicacy against a warm satin-birch ground. A fine border frames the design neatly. The box sits on small bun feet and is secured by a key lock, though the key is no longer present.
Inside, the box is lined throughout in rich red velvet, clean and intact. The hardware is chrome-finished.
Condition: Good overall. One small screw missing from the base, which does not affect function or stability. The velvet interior is clean with light age-related compression. It was once a music box and possibly could be restored to play its song again.
