Large Victorian Blue & White 'Asiatic Pheasants' Platter, J. Tams, Staffordshire
The largest of a trio of blue and white platters, this oval meat platter is transfer-printed with a more elaborate pattern than its companions: panelled border motifs featuring urns and scrollwork frame a generous central bouquet of roses and mixed foliage. The blue is soft and faded. Made by John Tams of Longton, Staffordshire, c.1875–1900.
Asiatic Pheasants was first produced in the 1840s and remained in continuous production well into the 20th century, made by dozens of Staffordshire potteries. The John Tams version is a solid, well-printed example of the pattern: unpretentious, good quality, and immediately recognisable to anyone with an eye for Victorian transferware.
Beautiful stacked with other blue and white.
Condition: Crazing throughout the glaze, heavy and consistent with significant age. The reverse shows heavy surface scratching across the base, likely from stacking or storage over a long period; this does not affect the front face.
