M Schilz German Westerwald Stoneware Jug
A substantial German Westerwald stoneware jug by M. Schilz, made in the Rhineland's Kannenbäckerland region. The classic globular body with pulled handle and flared foot is decorated in cobalt blue on a grey salt-glaze ground: spiralling scrolls at the shoulder, a broad horizontal band of stylised leaf and petal motifs wrapping the widest point of the body, and further scrollwork and floral sprigs above and below.
M. Schilz is a documented Westerwald workshop working within one of the most enduring folk ceramic traditions in Europe. The grey salt-glaze body and cobalt blue painted decoration became a regional signature from the 1600s onward. A handsome, useable jug with real presence on a shelf or table.
Condition: Excellent. No chips, cracks, or repairs visible.
