Meissen Neubrandenstein Plate with Opium Poppy
A fine Meissen porcelain plate in the Neubrandenstein form, produced during the Knaufzeit period (1860-1924) as part of the factory's sustained Neo-Rococo revival. The moulded border alternates between panels of raised basket-weave and fluid wave-shaped cartouches, a form that traces its origins to mid-18th century Meissen and was enthusiastically reissued during the Neo-Rococo movement of the latter 19th century.
The well is painted with an opium poppy - Papaver somniferum. It is a bicolour from the Laciniatum group of cultivars. Scattered sprigs appear around the interior and border panels, each small flower painted with the confident naturalism that distinguishes Meissen hand-painting across all periods. Kaiser Wilhelm II was among the admirers of this rococo aesthetic, having installed Neubrandenstein services at several imperial residences. A plate like this one would have been equally at home in aristocratic table settings or displayed as an object of beauty in its own right.
