Victorian Blue and White Transfer-Print Platter, Oriental Scenic Pattern
The central scene depicts figures in a boat on a calm waterway, with tall palms, colonial-style buildings on stilts, and distant sailing vessels - an orientalist fantasy typical of the 1840s to 1860s.
No maker's mark is visible, which was not unusual for English earthenware platters of this period. The form is classic - an oval well with a broad, gently shelved rim.
Condition: The front face presents well, with the transfer print clear and the pale blue glaze intact. There is overall crazing to the glaze, consistent with age and entirely expected for English earthenware of this period. The reverse shows the crazing more prominently, along with scattered brown kiln spots and age-related discolouration. A yellowish stain or residue is visible in the upper left area of the reverse - likely a previous repair.
