Antique Blue Willow Pearlware Platter c.1800–1825

A substantial early 19th-century English pearlware meat platter printed in the Blue Willow pattern - one of the most enduring and recognisable designs in the history of transferware. The classic scene is all present: the willow tree, the bridge with figures, the pavilions, the boat, and the pair of birds in flight above. The border carries the familiar geometric and floral banding that frames the composition with quiet formality.

The absence of a maker's mark is not a flaw - it is a hallmark of genuine age. Prior to around 1840, the great majority of Staffordshire earthenware left the kiln completely unmarked. Here, the buff-cream pearlware body, the scalloped cut-corner rim, and the soft, pale medium blue of the transfer print all point confidently to a date of manufacture between 1800 and 1825. A piece like this would have sat at the centre of a well-appointed table, bearing a joint of meat or a whole fish. Today it works just as well displayed on a dresser or propped on a shelf.

Condition: Very good for age. Some age-related spotting and crazing to the glaze, consistent with a piece of this period. No chips or cracks noted. The transfer print remains clear and legible throughout.
