Antique Hand Coloured Madagascan Sunset Moth Engraving by Jardine c1830
A beautifully detailed antique engraving of the Madagascan sunset moth, drawn from Sir William Jardine's celebrated Naturalist's Library and engraved by William Lizars in Edinburgh around 1830. Lizars worked in steel rather than copper, which let him capture the fine venation and scalework of the wings with remarkable precision, and each plate was then finished by hand in watercolour.
This example has been thoughtfully framed by 'Fine Line Framing' in a warm gilt moulding with a generous cream mount.
Condition: Good. The engraving shows some gentle undulation in the paper, visible in person rather than in photographs.
Dimensions: 34 x 41cm
