German Stoneware Oil and Vinegar Bottles
A matched pair of hand-painted stoneware cruet bottles, one labelled Olie (oil) and one Azijn (vinegar) in Dutch, in the cobalt blue on grey salt-glaze tradition of German Westerwald pottery.
Each bottle is cylindrical with a narrow neck and a rounded acorn-shaped stopper glazed in deep cobalt, and the body is decorated with a loose folk art pattern of heart shapes, stylised tulip leaves, and scrollwork, all painted freehand in the same vivid blue.
The combination of Dutch text with the Westerwald-style decoration is characteristic of ceramics produced in the Rhineland region for the Dutch and Belgian market, as well as the wider tourist and export trade. Pairs like this were a staple of the European folk ceramic tradition and were made in considerable numbers through the 20th century.
Condition: Good. Corks present and functional. Some minor variation in glaze consistent with handmade production.
Dimensions: 190mm h x 70mm diameter each
